Michigan riot after white police officer kills young African-American

by

Dozens of protesters rallied Wednesday night in the northern U.S. city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, following the release of a video showing a white police officer killing a young African American.

One of the four videos released from the incident, which took place on April 4, shows a police officer lying on the back of 26-year-old Patrick Liogia and then shooting him, apparently, in the head.

The videos that were made public were taken by the camera that the patrol car has, by the one that the police officer had on him and by a security camera that was placed by a neighbor.

This shows Liogia getting out of his car, after the police stopped him for a check, and asking “what did I do?” while the policeman persistently asks for his diploma and asks him to return to his vehicle.

Liogia seems to be obeying the orders of the policeman, but then closes the driver’s door and tries to leave the spot, resisting the policemen who were trying to handcuff him.

After a brief chase, Lioya and the policeman fall to the grass and appear to be fighting as the African-American tries to snatch the policeman’s teaser.

Dozens of people gathered yesterday in downtown Grand Rapids, a city in Michigan with about 200,000 inhabitants. Protesters held banners reading “Black lives count” and shouted “no justice, no peace”.

“I consider it a tragedy,” local police chief Eric Windstorm told a news conference yesterday in which the videos were released.

“The loss of a human life, regardless of circumstances, is something sad and I know it will have consequences for our city,” he added.

The police officer involved in the incident, whose name has not been revealed, has been made available, while the police of his state Michigan is investigating the incident, Windstorm pointed out.

“Another black man has died at the hands of the police and the police officer in this video must be held accountable,” the National Association for the Promotion of Colors (NAACP) said in a statement.
