The three astronauts of the Shenzou-13 mission returned to Earth today, after six months on the Chinese space station, breaking the record of staying in space for China, as broadcast by public television CCTV.
This is another historic achievement in China’s space program, which aims to bridge the gap with the United States, Europe and Russia.
Counting 183 days in space, the Shenzou-13 crew broke the previous national record of 92 days set in 2021 by the previous Shenzou-12 manned space mission.
The three-member crew consisted of 55-year-old pilot Zai Zingang, 42-year-old Wang Yaping and 41-year-old Yi Guangfu, whose first space flight.
The analysis of the medical examinations that the Shenzou-13 astronauts will undergo will allow Chinese experts to learn more about the impact of prolonged absence of gravity on the human body.
During the six-month mission, the crew delivered two online lessons to Chinese students, conducted experiments, improved personal skills and continued the construction work of the Chinese space station.
The Chinese space station, known in Chinese as Tiangong (Celestial Palace), but also known by its English acronym CSS (Chinese Space Station), is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
