Russia: Ultimatum to soldiers defending Mariupol to lay down their arms

by

The Russian Ministry of Defense issued an ultimatum to the Ukrainian soldiers defending Mariupol to lay down their weapons from 6 in the morning (Sunday), if they want to stay alive, overnight.

The news was broadcast by Reuters, citing the Russian news agency TASS.
According to the same source, the remaining soldiers in Mariupol – which Moscow claims are both Ukrainian and foreign – have been excluded from the Azovstal steel plant.

The head of the Russian Center for Defense Management, Lieutenant General Mikhail Mizinchev, said Moscow’s “offer” to the troops was due to the “catastrophic situation” at the plant and “purely humanitarian reasons”.

“We guarantee that the lives of all those who lay down their arms will be saved,” Mizinchev said.

Under the terms of the proposed agreement, the remaining soldiers inside the factory will have to leave between 06:00 and 13:00 without weapons and ammunition.

Zelensky: “The situation in Mariupol is extremely serious”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video message late last night that the situation in besieged Mariupol remained “extremely serious” and that Kyiv was in daily contact with forces defending the port city in southeastern Ukraine.
He even accused Russia of trying to exterminate the city’s residents, while not contradicting Moscow’s claim that its troops had cleared the entire urban area of Ukrainian forces.

New warning from Ukrainian President on possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia

In an interview with Ukrainian media, the Ukrainian president called on the world to “prepare” for possible use of nuclear weapons by Russia.
“We do not have to wait for Russia to decide whether to use its nuclear weapons. We have to prepare for that,” he told the Telegram in an interview with six Ukrainian news websites and the Ukrainian presidency.
He emphasized the need to focus on nuclear medicine and air defense systems, and said that it was even more important now with the crisis over nuclear weapons.
