Peru: President Castillo proposes chemical castration for juvenile rapists

by

Peruvian President Pedro Castillo said on Saturday that his government was considering imposing chemical castration on rapists of minors, among other drastic measures to combat such crimes.

“Enough with so much violence, sex crimes against children will not be tolerated by this government, nor will they go unpunished,” said Castillo, who said he was “outraged” by the rape of a 3-year-old girl who has rocked the country. .

The measure proposed by President Castillo must be approved by the Peruvian parliament.

Castillo said chemical castration of rapists was already practiced in countries such as Russia, Poland, South Korea, Indonesia and Moldova. Chemical castration is done by administering drugs that inhibit sexual desire.

According to the Peruvian Ministry of Women’s Rights, more than 21,000 minors have been raped in the last 4 years. In 2021 alone, 6,929 cases were recorded.

In Peru, juvenile rapists face life in prison.
