The reason for the Syrian singer Omar Suleiman, who became internationally known for combining electronic music with traditional Syrian rhythms, and was arrested in southeastern Turkey on charges of participating in a “terrorist organization”, as reported by many Turkish media.

The Syrian electro-music star is accused of being “a member of the PKK / YPG terrorist organization”, according to the pro-government Yeni κafak newspaper.

The 55-year-old artist has been living permanently in Turkey for many years. The city of Sanliurfa, about 50 kilometers from the Syrian border, was captured.

Omar Suleiman’s songs, including Warni Warni, which has nearly 100 million views on YouTube, have opened the door to major international festivals, such as South by Southwest in Texas.

Suleiman, who began his career singing at weddings in Syria, appears in video clips with dark sunglasses, a long gray scarf and a white and red checkered headscarf. He left his country for Turkey after the civil war broke out in 2011.

Ankara claims that the People’s Protection Units (YPG), Syria’s main Kurdish militia, is a branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an organization described as “terrorist” by Turkey, the EU and the US.
