Peru: Former President Alberto Fujimori re-admitted to hospital

by

Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, 83, who is serving a 25-year sentence for crimes against humanity and corruption, has been urgently re-admitted to a hospital in Lima on Sunday due to heart problems, the prison service said.

“(Yesterday) at dawn, detainee Alberto Fujimori was rushed to hospital, where his condition could be stabilized,” the National Prison Institute (INPE) said via Twitter.

His team of doctors then decided to admit him to a clinic in order to remain “under observation”, INPE added.

Mr Fuchimori had already been hospitalized for 11 days in early March due to heart problems.

His re-admission to hospital came just days after the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ordered the Peruvian state to “refrain from enforcing” a Constitutional Court ruling that upheld the former head of state’s early release.

The former president (1990-2000) has been suffering from atrial fibrillation since 2018, for which he underwent surgery in October.

His daughter, Keiko Fujimori, a three-time unlucky candidate in the second round of the presidential election (2011, 2016, 2021), had stated at the time that one of her father’s arteries was “70% blocked”.

Imprisoned since 2007, Alberto Fujimori suffers from various chronic diseases. His family has demanded countless times – in vain – that he be released from prison for health reasons.
