The Ukrainian government has completed a European Commission questionnaire that will form the basis for the start of accession talks between Brussels and Kyiv, said Igor Zovka, deputy director of the office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The president of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, handed over the questionnaire to Mr Zelensky during her visit to Kyiv on 8 April. He vowed to speed up Ukraine’s bid to join the EU after the Russian invasion, which began on February 24.
“I can say that the document was completed by the Ukrainian side,” Zovka told Ukrainian state television last Sunday night.
The European Commission should make a recommendation for Ukraine to comply with the necessary criteria for accession, he continued.
“We expect the recommendation (…) to be positive, and then the ball will be in the court of the EU Member States,” he added.
Zovka added that Kyiv expects Ukraine to become a candidate country for EU membership in June, at next month’s European Council.
Based on the program posted on its website, the European Council will meet on 23 and 24 June.
“Then (…) we will start accession negotiations. “Once we conduct these negotiations, we will be able to talk about Ukraine’s full accession to the EU,” Igor Zovka assured.
