Erdogan: announces talks with Putin – Zelenski and hopes to meet in Turkey

His intention to have a telephone conversation with the Russian president, Vladimir Putinand his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, in the coming days were expressed today by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the hope, as he said, that the telephone communication with them will lead to a meeting of leaders in Turkey aimed at termination of the war in Ukraine.

NATO member Turkey shares a maritime border with Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea, has good relations with both countries and has taken on a mediating role.

He has hosted talks between the Ukrainian and Russian Foreign Ministers in Antalya and between negotiators from the two countries in Istanbul, while pushing for a meeting between the two presidents.

“Our hopes have not been dashed,” Erdogan told reporters when asked about peace talks between Kiev and Moscow.

“… We plan to have another telephone conversation with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin and (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky today or tomorrow. “By telephone, we intend to take the Istanbul process to the level of leaders,” Erdogan added.
