Russian President Vladimir Putin today told European Council President Charles Michel that he would sit at the same table for direct talks with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, only if the talks lead to concrete results.
Putin also said that Kyiv was not yet ready to seek commonly accepted solutions and that Ukraine was unpredictable in the negotiations.
In telephone communication they had todayMichel called on Putin to hold direct talks with Zelensky and called for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
In a telephone interview, Michel stressed “strongly and clearly” that the war in Ukraine was unacceptable and described in detail the cost of EU sanctions on Russia.
Michel also demanded a truce on the occasion of Orthodox Easter and called for humanitarian corridors to be opened so that civilians could safely leave besieged cities such as Mariupol.
Their telephone conversation followed Michel’s visit to Ukraine on Wednesday.
