Bild am Sonntag: Germany will buy 60 transport helicopters from Boeing

by

The German government will buy 60 CH-47F Chinook transport helicopters, worth about 5 billion euros, from the American industry Boeing, as part of the upgrade of the country’s air force, Bild am Sonntag reports in today’s issue.

This is part of the € 100 billion military equipment spending announced by Chancellor Olaf Solz after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The helicopters will be delivered in 2025 and 2026 and will replace the obsolete – they were put into service about fifty years ago – CH-53G of Sikorsky, an industry that is now part of the Lockheed Martin group, the publication states.

Defense Secretary Christine Lambrecht will brief the federal parliament on the supply within the next week, always according to Bildt sources.

Lockheed Martin’s alternative purchase of CH-53K King Stallion helicopters was also considered, but it was ultimately borne out by the fact that the Boeing model is cheaper and that many NATO member states prefer Chinook, according to the report.

A spokesman for Germany’s defense ministry said, however, that no official decision had yet been taken on the purchase of the helicopters.
