Economy and Climate Protection Minister Robert Hubeck has again called for the delivery of heavy weapons to Ukraine, while acknowledging that the issue is delicate as it raises the question of whether this would lead to German involvement in the war.
Under international law, “supporting a country that endures an aggressive war is not an active entry into the war,” Mr Habeck told German public television channel ZDF on Sunday night. “But Vladimir Putin will certainly not consult a textbook of international law before committing the next act of insanity,” he said, adding that “we have good reason to doubt whether (Vladimir) Putin will abide by the law.”
The Minister of Economy also stressed that there is no clear “red zone” and called for a careful but decisive examination of the issue. Referring to Chancellor Olaf Soltz, who has been criticized as particularly reluctant, Robert Habeck stressed that Germany “should not be idle by fear and paralysis in the face of a Putin threat.”
Next week, the Federal Parliament will be called upon to decide on the supply of heavy weapons to Ukraine, with the Christian Union (CDU / CSU) threatening to submit its own proposal on the issue. “I hope the Bundestag does not split into government and opposition. “I would prefer the Parliament to decide united and unanimously”, the politician of the Greens underlined.
Robert Habeck directly supported the continuation of military support for Ukraine from Germany. “Is Ukraine fighting for itself and are we helping it, or is it fighting for us a war that also defends the freedom of the whole of Europe? “The latter is the clear answer that Germany has given and must continue to give, over and over again,” the minister explained.
