The Moldovan president condemned any attempt by her country to engage in actions that would jeopardize peace in the country, citing forces that “want to destabilize the Transnistrian region”.

Maya Santou convened the Security Council after the attacks and explosions on two communication antennas in Transnistria, clarifying that they do not know who is responsible for the attacks or whether they are groups from inside the country or abroad.

The Moldovan president spoke of escalating tensions after the two attacks, as “there have been false bomb alerts in recent weeks. “There are different tensions between different forces in the Transnistrian region and that makes the Republic of Moldova vulnerable,” Ms Santou added.

Alarm after the two attacks

Its principles Transnistria upgraded to red the alarm level for “Terrorist threat” based on the series of bombings observed in the last hours in pro-Russian pocket.

A climate of concern has prevailed since its inception Russian attack on Ukraine in Moldova, a former Soviet republic that fears it will be Moscow’s next target.

The concern intensified after series of explosions which took place yesterday and today in Transnistria, which financially and militarily supported by Moscow.

Yesterday, an explosion occurred at the headquarters of the local Ministry of Public Security of the self-proclaimed democracy in the “capital” Tiraspolwhile today explosions hit radio tower destroying two antennas, in the village of Mayak, near the border with Ukraine. Shortly afterwards, the Transnistrian Security Council announced a “terrorist attack” on a military unit near Tiraspol.

The “incidents” occur at a time when the Moldovan authorities are afraid of opening a side of the Russian offensive in Ukraine and while Chisinau’s relations with Moscow are strained by the assumption of the presidency by pro-European Maya Santou.

Fears were heightened last week when a Russian general said Moscow was seeking to occupy southern Ukraine, which borders Transnistria, in order to secure direct access to the Moscow-backed separatist enclave, both financially and militarily.

THE General Rustam Minekaev, Deputy Commander of the Central Russian Forces, He also said that the Russian-speaking population of Moldova was a “victim of oppression”. This pretext is systematically invoked by Moscow for its military interventions. He also referred to the “defense of the Russian minority” for its invasion of Ukraine.

Moldova has summoned the Russian ambassador to protest the threat, urging Moscow to “respect its territorial integrity.”

Transnistria seceded from the state of Moldova after brief civil conflict after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The pocket, with a population of 500,000 inhabitants, edepends almost entirely on Moscowwhich supplies free gas and has deployed 1,500 troops there.

Moldova, a small Eastern European country with a population of 2.6 million, sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, is already suffering the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine with an influx of 400,000 refugees.
