Syria: ‘Israeli attack’ under way, missile intercepted near Damascus

by

The Syrian air defenses intercepted an Israeli missile near the capital Damascus, the official SANA news agency reported in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“Our air defenses responded to an Israeli attack on a suburb of Damascus,” a military source told the agency. He did not give further details.

Correspondents from the French news agency and Reuters news agency reported that they heard loud explosions in the Syrian capital.

Since the outbreak of war in Syria in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes, almost all of them from the air, against positions of the Syrian government’s armed forces as well as their allies, Iranian and pro-Iranian armed groups, especially the Shiite militia.

The Jewish state seldom confirms or publicly comments on these blows, but often states that it will not allow Iran, its sworn enemy, to build a bridgehead or extend its influence over Syrian territory.

The complicated war in Syria, in which many foreign forces and jihadist organizations have intervened, has claimed the lives of at least half a million people since 2011, destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure and turned millions into internally displaced persons and refugees.
