CNN: Partial or total lockdown in at least 27 cities in China – What is the picture of the Shanghai pandemic

by

Partial or total lockdowns in at least 27 cities have been imposed by Chinese authorities, with restraining measures affecting up to 165 million people, according to CNN estimates.

According to the US media, China has implemented a lockdown in its two largest cities, Beijing and Shanghai, the “twin engines” that power much of the nation’s economy – in a controversial effort to eliminate Covid-19 outbreaks. .

Shanghai is at the center of the latest outbreak, with more than 10,000 new cases a day. Beijing officials have carried out mass raids, closed schools and imposed targeted lockdowns on some residential buildings in a bid to curb infections, sparking fears of a wider Shanghai-like lockdown.

Throughout the pandemic, China has insisted on a strict coronation zero strategy, implementing the “zero policywith hard lockdowns, mass testing, quarantines and border closures to curb the virus.

In any case, the emergence of the highly contagious Omicron variant has called into question the viability of this strategy, with the virus spreading to different cities and provinces faster than the government can contain.
