A double bombing killed Thursday in northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif at least nine people and the injury of many others. The target was two passenger vans carrying Shiite Muslims, a local official said.
“The bombs were planted inside the van. “Nine people were killed and thirteen were injured in the blasts,” Mohammad Asif Wazeri, a spokesman for the district governor, told Reuters.
So far there has been no claim of responsibility for the bombings. The Shiite community, which is a minority in Afghanistan, is frequently attacked by Sunni extremists, including jihadists from the self-proclaimed Islamic State.
Today’s double bombing in Mazar-i-Sharif came days after an explosion at a Shiite mosque in the same city killed 33 people.
The Taliban, who came to power after the withdrawal of Western forces, claimed a few days ago that they had almost eliminated the presence of the Islamic State in Afghanistan. However, despite their claims, attacks on Shiite Muslims continue in various parts of the country.
Last week, six people were killed in a series of school bombings in the capital, Kabul, where members of the Hazara Shiite minority live.
