Kyiv was the target of Russian bombings on Thursday, during the visit of UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to the Ukrainian capital. At least ten people were injured in the attacks, according to Ukrainian authorities.

French News Agency (AFP) reporters reported significant damage to a building that had been engulfed in flames, with rescue teams and police rushing to the scene.

“This says a lot about Russia’s true attitude towards international institutions, about the efforts of Russian leaders to humiliate the UN and everything it stands for,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, referring to the “five missiles” that struck. the capital “shortly after the end of the talks” with Antonio Guterres.

“We are safe,” a UN spokesman told AFP, speaking on WhatsApp.

According to the Ukrainian authorities, a fire broke out after the bombing of a 25-storey building complex, the first two floors of which were severely damaged. Ten people were injured and rescue workers released five occupants, they said.

The mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed in a Telegram post two attacks in the Shevchenkovsky district of the Ukrainian capital.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba called the attacks “disgusting” and said in a Twitter post that the attacks were carried out with Cruz missiles. “With this heinous act of barbarism, Russia is proving once again its attitude towards Ukraine, Europe and the world,” he said.

Mikhail Pontolyak, an adviser to the Ukrainian president, sharply commented on the attack in Kyiv. As UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrote in a Twitter post, “yesterday he was sitting at a long table in the Kremlin and today he (heard) explosions over his head.”

After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the UN secretary-general assured that the United Nations was doing everything possible to prevent the evacuation of the Mariupol steel plant, where soldiers and civilians have taken refuge.

Antonio Guterres reiterated that the Russian invasion violates the territorial integrity of Ukraine and the Charter of the United Nations.
