The United States said Friday it was refusing to talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin “as if nothing was happening” after the invasion of Ukraine, commenting on Indonesia’s invitation to attend the G20 summit in November, along with His Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
“The United States continues to believe that nothing can be done about Russia’s involvement in international affairs,” said Jalina Porter, a State Department spokeswoman.
The spokeswoman did not specify, however, whether, because of this invitation, Washington would refuse to attend the meeting.
Indonesia, which currently chairs the G20, announced earlier that it had invited Zelensky and Putin to the November summit.
US President Joe Biden has publicly expressed his opposition to Putin’s presence at the G20, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki recalled, while welcoming Jakarta’s invitation to the Ukrainian president.
Indonesia has come under pressure from Western countries to exclude Russia from the summit, but has refused, explaining that its role as a host country forces it to remain “neutral”.
