German citizens should be provided with basic supplies of food, liquids and raw materials in their homes, advises Home Secretary Nancy Fezer in an interview with Handelsblatt in the context of a wider discussion on the war in Ukraine.

“We must be prepared to deal with multiple crises: pandemics, the effects of climate change, the dangers of war.” For these reasons, according to the German minister, it is important to prepare the country and its citizens at many levels, not only materially but also by creating stocks of food or medical supplies.

In the case of cyber attacks capable of destroying basic water supply and electricity supply infrastructure, the German minister refers the citizens to the recommendations of the Federal Civil Protection Service.

Detailed list for organizing home supplies

The recommendations of the competent service include, among other things, a detailed list of basic supplies that all citizens must have at home in the event of an emergency. These supplies are in principle sufficient for ten days at home, without the need for additional shopping.

Necessary supplies for one person are considered, according to the German service, the following: 20 liters in water and liquids, 3.5 kg in cereals, bread, potatoes, rice and pasta, but also 1.5 kg in meat, fish and eggs .

The recommendations also include instructions for the proper storage and preservation of food, basic information about what the human body needs daily in nutrients, but also specific information to meet the vital needs of pets.

Of course, the Civil Protection recommends the avoidance of panic but also the creation of these stocks gradually and not with bulk shopping. The goal is not to have -again- empty shelves in supermarkets and shortages in suppliers.
