This morning, Danish Foreign Minister Gepe Kofod reopened his country’s embassy in Kyiv during a surprise visit to Ukraine.

“It is a very strong symbol of Denmark’s support for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people that the doors of the Danish embassy are reopening today,” he said in a statement.

With the Russian army concentrated on the eastern front of Ukraine and its withdrawal from the outskirts of Kiev by the end of March, the security situation in the Ukrainian capital has improved.

US diplomacy announced today that it hopes to reopen its embassy in Kyiv “by the end of the month”.

Like others, the Danish embassy was closed due to the security situation and the diplomats, after a temporary representation in the city of Lviv in the west, left Ukraine at the end of February.

The first of the Nordic countries to reopen, the Danish embassy will initially operate with a limited number of people.

According to Copenhagen, the embassy is expected to operate gradually with the total number of its staff members.

Danish Prime Minister Mete Frederiksen traveled to Kyiv on April 21 at the same time as her Spanish counterpart.

Frederiksen had announced an additional 600 million kroner (80.6 million euros) in military aid to Ukraine, increasing the total military aid to one billion kroner.
