Turkey plans to expel 1 million Syrians – Polls tarnish Erdogan

by

A plan for the mass departure of Syrian refugees from Turkey was announced by President Tayyip Erdogan.

The plan concerns the voluntary return of refugees to Syria and marks a “turning point” in Erdogan’s stance so far, which said the refugees are part of Turkey and will stay here.

“In the security zones created by Turkey since 2016, about 500,000 Syrian citizens have returned. “We support the plans for the voluntary return of refugees, aiming to contain the refugee wave at the border”, “now we are preparing for a new plan for the voluntary return of one million Syrian refugees”, stated characteristics.

SKAI’s correspondent in Turkey, Manolis Kostidis, explained that the change in Erdogan’s attitude towards the Syrian refugees may be related to the most unfavorable polls that show that he loses in a duel in the second round of elections, whoever his opponent is. As the economic crisis in Turkey affects the incomes of the Turks, the perception that “the refugees are to blame” is deepening in the society and Erdogan is trying to reverse the negative climate.

The Metropol poll measures Erdogan and his potential opponents in the second round:

  • Masour Yavas (Mayor of Ankara) 53.9% – Tayyip Erdogan 36.5%
  • Imamoglu (mayor of Istanbul) 49.7% – Tayyip Erdogan 40.9%
  • Kilincdaroglu 43.3% – Tayyip Erdogan 42.5%
  • Aksener 43.8% – Tayyip Erdogan 41.9%
