Moldova, a small former Soviet republic crammed between Romania and Ukraine with a population of 2.5 million, is worried about the Russian invasion on February 24 of an extension of the war in Ukraine into its territory.
The concerns were heightened following a series of explosions last week in Transnistria, a Moscow-backed region that has seceded from Moldova after a brief conflict in 1992.
Russia, which maintains a force of 1,500 troops in the pro-Russian enclave, said it was “concerned” about “terrorist acts” and warned that it was monitoring the situation.
At a time when fears of provocation are being expressed as May 9th, the day of the celebration of victory against Nazi Germany, approaches, Maia Santou appeared reassuring.
“We do not see an immediate danger … but we have plans to deal with such pessimistic scenarios,” he told a joint news conference.
Regarding the incidents in Transnistria, the Moldovan president said that all indications are directed at the responsibility of “the forces that favor the war”.
