New evidence in Madeleine Makan-Ti disappearance case revealed by German prosecutor

Authorities have found new evidence that may be blaming the main suspect for the disappearance of the little Madeleine Macan 15 years ago in Portugal, said Hans Christian Walters, the German prosecutor who has been investigating the case since 2020.

In an interview with Portuguese television channel CMTV on Tuesday, Walters said police believed they had found “some data, some new evidence”, adding: “We are sure that (Christian Bruckner) is the killer of Madeline Makan.

Bruckner, who has been convicted of child abuse and drug trafficking, remains in prison in Germany for another case of raping a woman in the same Algarve area where the little Briton disappeared in 2007. At the time, Madeleine was three years.

Last month a Portuguese prosecutor named him as a suspect Bruckner. This is the first time a “suspect” has been reported missing since her parents were indicted in 2007, who were later acquitted.

Bruckner, 45, denies any involvement in Madeline’s disappearance from the room where she slept while her family was on holiday in Portugal. There was some speculation that evidence was found in the motorhome used by Bruckner at the time. The CMTV reporter asked Walters if he denied the allegations, to which he replied: “I do not want to refute them.”

The caravan has been in the possession of German police since June 2020, when authorities began investigating information about Bruckner.

Walters said he could not give details of the ongoing German investigation because the suspect would have to be notified in advance. He had previously told Reuters that Portuguese prosecutors had named Bruckner as a suspect so that the 15-year statute of limitations would not expire.

“Regardless of the outcome, Madeline will always be our daughter and a really horrible crime was committed” reported the child’s parents yesterday, on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of its disappearance. The Makans have been working tirelessly for years to shed light on the case of the child’s disappearance. In Britain, many celebrities, from businessmen to writers and footballers, have publicly appealed for information about Madeleine’s fate.
