Vienna: We will not pay in rubles for Russian gas

by

Austria does not intend to pay on Russian gas in rubles, Foreign Minister Alexander Salenberg clarified in an interview with Al Jazeera.

“Our position is clear. We are committed to existing agreements [με τη Ρωσία] “We will not pay in rubles, we have no such intention,” Salenberg said.

In late March, Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded that payments for gas supplies to “unfriendly countries” be made in rubles to support the Russian currency. He also instructed the government to give Gazprom a directive to amend existing contracts. On March 31, Putin signed a decree on gas trade rules with unfriendly countries, setting out a new contract payment system.

The new payment procedure for Russian gas in rubles from buyers from “unfriendly countries” came into force on April 1st.

For his part, Austrian Chancellor Carl Nehammer said on April 27 that Austria could pay for Russian gas in euros, despite changes in the payment process introduced by Gazprom. The Austrian oil and gas company OMV said in response to a request for comment from Russian news agency TASS that it had analyzed information from Gazprom and was working on a solution that would comply with the terms of the sanctions.
