British primary: Labor-Conservative triumph in London – Johnson may avoid catastrophe

by

London, Thanasis Gavos

The counting of their votes continues in Britain municipal elections on Thursdaywith the results that stand out so far concerning London.

THE Boris Johnson and the Conservatives have suffered heavy losses in the capital, with them Workers take control of the southwestern municipality of Wadsworth for the first time since 1978to win for the first time since its formation in 1964 the municipality of Westminster and to win for the first time the majority of the municipality of Barnett in the north of the city.

Nevertheless, Sir Kir Starmer’s Labor performance outside London seems to be falling short of expectations for the time being, narrowing the Conservatives’ overall losses to some extent.

According to the “guru” of the British pollsters Sir John Curtis, Labor has raised rates in London, but is “slightly lower” in the periphery compared to the results of the previous municipal elections in 2018.

With the census completed in 77 of the 200 municipalities polled in England, Scotland and Wales, the Conservatives lose 122 municipal councilors, the Labor Party gains 35, while the performance of the Liberal Democrats so far is very positive, gaining 58 municipal councilors more than 2018.

Sir Kir Starmer said the victories in London were a “turning point” for his Labor Party, although for the time being most political commentators did not see a clear dynamic of Labor victory in the next parliamentary elections.

On the other hand, local officials and some Tory MPs point to the involvement of Boris Johnson in the partygate, as well as the increased cost of living, as a factor that removed voters from the party. However, it is not immediately clear whether the result that tends to emerge is sufficient to renew the Prime Minister’s internal party controversy.

At the same time, the counting of votes in the elections for the new composition of Stormont, the local parliament of Northern Ireland, is taking place since this morning.

According to opinion polls, the Republican Sinn Féin party, which wants to secede from the crown and unite with the Republic of Ireland, is likely to win the election for the first time, this time followed by the Democratic Union Party (DUP).

She the possible change of balances is characterized as “historic”with analysts talking about an unknown impact on the unity of the United Kingdom and a possible constitutional crisis.

The Good Friday Peace Agreement provides for co-government between the largest parties in each community in Northern Ireland. Many, however, appreciate that In the event of Sinn Fein victory, which will allow him to be the local Prime Minister, the DUP will not accept the appointment of a Deputy Prime Minister and participate in an “anti-British” government.
