Over 8 million people have been displaced inside Ukraine since the Russian invasion of the country began on February 24, as announced today by United Nations International Organization for Migration (IOM).
In all, the IOM estimates that 13.686 million people were forced to flee their homes due to the offensive launched by Vladimir Putin, of which 8.029 million have been relocated elsewhere in Ukraine, with the rest having fled the country.
In the last count, the IOM had recorded 7.7 million internally displaced.
“The needs of the internally displaced and all those affected by the war in Ukraine are growing by the hour.” warned the agency’s director general Antonio Vitorino, emphasizing that the “Access to populations in need is difficult as hostilities continue”.
These displaced people say they need financial help first.
“Two-thirds of people surveyed put the need for liquidity on their to-do list, compared with 49% at the start of the war.”according to the IOM.
More than 70% of people surveyed said they would use this financial aid to buy food and / or medicine.
Another pressing need is accommodation. Among the internally displaced, 27% said their home had been damaged.
In addition, the IOM notes that more than 2.7 million people have chosen to return to their homes. The vast majority (93%) had fled elsewhere in the country.
The survey was conducted among 2,000 people, anonymously by telephone, from April 29 to May 3.
