Finland’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) would significantly strengthen the deterrent to not becoming a target of Russian aggression, the defense committee said in a statement.
Finland, which shares a 1,300-kilometer border and a difficult past with neighboring Russia, is reconsidering its long-standing stance on avoiding NATO membership in order to maintain friendly relations with its eastern neighbor.

The parliamentary defense committee commented on the issue in response to the government’s updated White Paper on Foreign and Security Policy.
“NATO membership is the best solution for Finland’s security. It strengthens Finland’s national defense capability by supporting the alliance’s significant military resources.”said the chairman of the committee and leader of the main opposition party Peteri Orpo, of the National Coalition party.
