An Al Jazeera reporter was shot dead by the Israeli army in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday (11), according to the Qatari news channel. Israeli military said she may have been shot by Palestinians during clashes with troops.
A Palestinian official said Shireen Abu Akleh was “murdered” by Israeli forces while reporting on an attack in the city of Jenin, which has seen an escalation of violence in recent weeks with intensified actions by Israeli troops.
The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed Abu Akleh’s death and said a second reporter, Ali Samodi, was wounded.
In a statement, Israel said its troops retaliated after coming under “massive fire” in Jenin and that “there is a possibility, now being investigated, that the reporters were hit – possibly by shots fired by Palestinian snipers”.
Israel’s foreign minister called the reporter’s death sad and proposed a joint investigation of the incident with the Palestinian Authority.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said he held Israeli forces fully responsible for the killing.
