Russia poses new nuclear threat after Finland announces NATO membership

by

One of his closest allies President Vladimir Putin warns West today of growing US and allied military support for Ukraine there is a risk of a conflict between Russia and the NATO military alliance.

THE former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is now vice-president of the country’s Security Council, said such a conflict with NATO always carries the risk of turning into a nuclear war.

“The fact that NATO countries are sending weapons to Ukraine, training troops to use Western equipment, sending mercenaries, as well as Allied exercises near our borders increase the likelihood of a direct and open conflict between NATO and Russia.” Medvedev states in a post on the Telegram application.

“Such a conflict always carries the risk of turning into a full-blown nuclear war,” Medvedev said. “That would be a disastrous scenario for everyone.”

Russia and the United States are by far the largest nuclear powers in the world. Russia has 6,257 nuclear warheads, while NATO’s three nuclear powers – the United States, the United Kingdom and France – together have 6,065 nuclear warheads, according to the Washington-based Arms Control Association.
