More than one million people have died from Covid-19 in the United States, the country with the highest number of victims on the planet, the White House said on Thursday (12).
“Today we reach a tragic milestone: one million American lives lost to Covid-19,” President Joe Biden said in a statement. “We must remain vigilant against this pandemic and do everything possible to save as many lives as possible, as we have done with more tests, vaccines and treatments than ever before.”
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the numbers of member countries compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO) have recorded a total of 5.4 million deaths from Covid-19 in two years.
But the WHO said last week that the pandemic caused between 13 and 17 million deaths worldwide from January 2020 to December 2021, almost triple the official balance sheet total, which shows the devastation wrought by the most serious pandemic on record. on the planet in a century.
After several months of falling infections in the country with the most deaths from the virus in the world (followed by Brazil, India and Russia), the US has recorded a daily increase in cases for a month.
The discharge takes place in a context in which the mask is no longer mandatory, although its use continues to be recommended indoors, and the fourth dose of the vaccine is only available for people over 50 years old.
The increase in cases is caused by subvariants of the omicron, which are more transmissible than previous strains, although the effects seem less serious in a country where 66% of the population is vaccinated. The index reaches 90% among people over 65 years old.
