A 5.5 magnitude earthquake was felt in Lima and its environs yesterday Thursday, causing panic among the residents, however no casualties or damage have been reported so far.
According to the National Seismological Center of Peru, the quake occurred at 16:55 (local time; at 00:55 today Greek time) and its epicenter was located 30 kilometers west of Tsilka, a seaside town 70 kilometers south of the capital, while the focal depth was 49 km.
The epicenter was reported below the ground, however; no tsunami alert was issued.
In several neighborhoods of the Peruvian capital, people took to the streets cautiously, including several parliamentarians who attended a congressional meeting, according to footage broadcast by the country’s television networks.
Peru is located on the so-called Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean, an area with intense seismic and volcanic activity. On January 7, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook Lima and neighboring cities, injuring nine people and damaging several homes.
