Negotiations between the West and Moscow are in the phase of parallel monologues, in order to find a common component, which will possibly lead to the end of the war in Ukraine. The phone conversation they had on Friday Chancellor Olaf Soltz and Russian President Vladimir Putin did not offer anything substantial, but proved that on the one hand the bridges of communication have not been cut, but on the other hand not the slightest progress has been made towards peace.
The disagreements of the two sides at all levels proved once again. In a Twitter post, Chancellor Soltz states:
“Three things from my long telephone conversation with Putin today: There must be a ceasefire in Ukraine as soon as possible. The claim that Nazis rule there is wrong. “And I pointed out Russia’s responsibility for the global food situation.”
The Kremlin, for its part, said Vladimir Putin had referred in his conversation with Olaf Solz to “neo-Nazi military battalions operating in Donbas and affecting the local population.” the involvement “caused by Kyiv” in the negotiations for a ceasefire.
Putin also referred to the reasons that led him to the decision to carry out the “special military operation” in Ukraine and confirmed that the evacuation of the Azovstal plant has been completed.
The two leaders, although they did not reach out to each other, agreed to continue the discussions, which is the only positive and substantial part of their last conversation.
