Abdallah Hamdok, the Sudanese prime minister ousted by the October 25 military coup, was reinstated today, signing an agreement reached with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
In his first public appearance since the coup, when he was placed under house arrest, Hamdock delivered a short speech on behalf of Burhan, the army leader and leader of the coup. At the signing ceremony at the presidential palace, they both said they were committed to continuing the process of transition to democracy.
Hamdock said the deal with the military leadership was aimed at ending the bloodshed.
“I know that our young people are worthy of sacrifices, they are determined, they can give what they have most valuable. “But Sudanese blood is precious. Let us stop the bloodshed and direct the energy of young people towards reconstruction and growth.”
The agreement provides for the formation of a technocratic government under Hamdock and the release of all political prisoners, according to excerpts read on state television.
