The Prime Minister of Sweden announced a while ago that her country will formally apply for NATO membership.
The announcement was made during a press conference Magdalena Anderson in Stockholm.
The Swedish Prime Minister began his speech by saying that the decision to abandon the country’s doctrine of military neutrality, which has been a central element of Swedish national identity for more than 200 years, is a historic change.
“We will inform NATO that we want to join the alliance,” Ms Anderson said after a parliamentary debate on security policy today.
She added: “There is a large majority in the Swedish parliament for NATO membership. “The best thing for Sweden and the Swedish people is to join NATO.”
Earlier, the Swedish Social Democratic Party gave the green light for the country to join NATO, but will express reservations about the deployment of foreign military bases and nuclear weapons on its territory.
Public opinion in both Sweden and Finland was strongly opposed to NATO membership until Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, after which opinion polls showed a dramatic shift in favor of membership.
