Police identify gunman who attacked church in California

by

Authorities on Monday identified the suspect in a shooting that killed one person and wounded five others at a California church on Sunday.

According to the Orange County sheriff, his name is David Chou, 68, from Las Vegas and was arrested on charges of murder and attempted murder.

The attack took place at a Presbyterian church in Laguna Woods, a town of 18,000 people 80 kilometers from Los Angeles, over lunch. The assailant was detained by the faithful, who tied his legs with an electric wire.

The injured are all of Asian descent – four men aged between 66 and 92 and an 86-year-old woman – and were taken to hospital, police said.

A Taiwanese congregation was at the scene at the time of the attack, but officials did not say whether they were the target or make any statements about the motive for the attack. According to them, it is unclear whether it was a hate crime. Two pistols were found at the scene.

The attack came just a day after another gunshot attack on Saturday (14) at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York. An 18-year-old white man opened fire at a supermarket in a mostly black neighborhood, killing ten and wounding three in what authorities described as a purely racist attack.
