Lebanon: UN Secretary-General expects government to be formed as soon as possible

by

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Monday that he was “looking forward to the formation of an inclusive government as soon as possible” in Lebanon, following the country’s parliamentary elections in deep economic crisis.

Congratulating the Lebanese authorities on the smooth conduct of the vote, the UN chief explained that the formation of a new government would allow “the finalization of the (negotiated) agreement with the International Monetary Fund and accelerate the implementation of the necessary steps.” “for Lebanon to enter the path of recovery”, according to a press release issued by the spokesman of Stefan Duzarik.

“The Secretary-General is also counting on the new parliament to urgently adopt all the necessary laws to stabilize the economy and improve governance,” the statement added. “To this end, he calls on Lebanese political leaders to work to serve the highest interests of Lebanon and the Lebanese people.”

The strongest parliamentary coalition in Lebanon, led by the powerful pro-Iranian Hezbollah movement, which has an armed arm, seems to have suffered a severe blow, with the opposition and independents recording victories, based on preliminary results released yesterday.

Turnout was extremely low in Sunni-majority areas, one of the largest communities in the country where the political system is based on power-sharing between religious and tribal communities.
