Russia to try to advance on Donbas with massive artillery strikes, British say

The British Ministry of Defense estimates that in the coming weeks Russia will probably continue to rely on massive artillery strikes as it tries to regain momentum in its advance to Donbass.

In its latest update, the ministry notes that in the Chernihiv region north of Kiev, the Russians destroyed or damaged 3,500 buildings during a failed attempt to advance into the Ukrainian capital. 80% of the damage there has been caused to residential buildings.

The scale of this damage, the British ministry comments, indicates its readiness Russia to use artillery against residential areas indiscriminately and without thinking whether these blows are disproportionate to the threat to its forces.

“Russia has probably become increasingly dependent on indiscriminate artillery bombardment due to its limited ability to achieve targets and a reluctance to jeopardize fighter jets over its own front lines,” the statement said.
