Nelson de Sá: US rushes to take ‘huge advantage’ of China in Africa

by

Chinese Guancha reported on US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s brief African tour, underscoring a reaction from Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Geoffrey Onyeama (pictured below). When asked by the American press about “criticism of his government for relying on Chinese loans”, he said:

“Well, we don’t borrow for nothing and we try to be extremely prudent. In reality, our debt-GDP ratio is very good and we keep an eye on that. The reality is also that the government realized that in order to industrialize it had to put infrastructure on its feet , and we saw a great opportunity with the Chinese.”

The trip also passed through Kenya and ended in Senegal. And it is in Senegal that next week, underlined Guancha, the Forum for Sino-African Cooperation, which will bring together ministers from China and almost all nations on the continent.

In his coverage of Blinken, the New York Times highlighted how he ended up seeing “giant” Chinese works all the way through. And then the paper ran, headlined and extensively, “How the US lost ground to China in the race” for Congo cobalt, used for “clean energy.”

Beijing opened up “huge lead in the race to dominate the electrification of the auto industry” after the US “essentially turned over the resources” of Congo under the Obama and Trump administrations. In separate text, “Like Hunter Biden’s company [filho de Joe] helped secure cobalt for the Chinese.”

But all is not lost, says the NYT. “Congolese are reviewing mining contracts with help from the US government in an effort to fight corruption.”

PENG SHUAI, POR HU XIJIN

Do editor do Global Times, Hu Xijin, linking the conversation between the Chinese tennis player and the IOC president:

“As long as what Peng Shuai says is not in line with Western media expectations, they won’t believe it. They just believe the story they imagine about China. I’m surprised they didn’t say that the person who showed up is a fake Peng Shuai, a stuntman”.
