One sketch of Michael Angelou sold today against 23 million euros at Christie’s auction in Paris, record amount for a work by the Italian Teacher.
The design is dated from the end of the 15th century and depicts a naked man, standing, between two other faces in the background. The painter used a pen and brown ink. It was sold in 1907 by the auction house Drouot, in Paris, as a work attributed to the “School of Michael Angelos”. Only in 2019, as part of a research for a private French collection of works of art, was it attributed to Michael Angelos himself.
The previous record for a sketch by the famous Italian painter and sculptor was reached in July 2000. At that time, Christie’s in London sold the “Resurrection of Christ” project for 9.5 million euros.
The sketch sold in Paris is the size of an A4 sheet of paper and appears to have been based on a fresco by Mazacho (“The Baptism of the Enlightenment”). In September 2019 it was declared a “national treasure” for France, which means that he was banned from leaving the country for 30 months and the French state and museums were given the opportunity to buy it.
