US: Senate unanimously approves Bridget Brink’s appointment as ambassador to Kyiv

by

THE appointment of diplomat Bridget Brink in her place US Ambassador to Kyiv approved unanimously by voice last Wednesday night by the Senate, just a few hours after the State Department announced that the US embassy in the Ukrainian capital, which had been closed after the invasion of the country on February 24, began to reopen.

Ms. Brink has been an ambassador to Slovakia, an expert on Eastern Europe and the Caucasus at the State Department, and a deputy ambassador to Uzbekistan and Georgia. Serves about 25 years.

Washington had to appoint head of the US embassy in Kyiv from 2019when former Republican President Donald Trump fired Marie Jovanovic.

Jovanovic later turned into a key witness in Mr. Trump’s first Senate trial, testifies about Republican threat to freeze US military aid to Ukraine to pressure Kyiv to carry out investigation into corruption against his son and himself of his then potential rival in the 2020 presidential election: Joe Biden.

The chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Democrat Bob Menendez, said on Twitter that he was “proud” of the rapid ratification of Ms. Brink’s appointment by the US House of Representatives. Bridget Brink was named the new ambassador by President Biden just a few weeks ago.

The Senate is also expected to approve the nearly $ 40 billion US military, financial and humanitarian aid package to Ukraine within a week.
