The former king of Spain, Juan Carlosreturns today by air to Spain for his first visit since settled in Abu Dhabiin 2020, in echo of financial scandals which had caused creaks in the palace.
The former monarch will travel to Sansenzo, in the northern region of Galicia, to watch boat races, and will conclude his visit on Monday, when he will meet with his son, King Felipein Madrid, as the Royal House announced yesterday, Wednesday, in an announcement.
Juan Carlos, 84, will not stay at the Tartuela Palace in Madrid, the king’s official residence, the statement said.
The popularity of the former king, who was once highly regarded in his country for his role in its democratization, has dropped dramatically following a series of scandals, including his love affair with a Dane, Corina zu Sein-Wittgenstein , and the elephant hunt in which he had taken part in Botswana.
In 2014 he resigned from the throne.
Juan Carlos left Spain for Abu Dhabi in August 2020, following a series of investigations against him that had begun in his country and Switzerland for tax evasion.
He currently resides in the United Arab Emirates, but said in March he would visit Spain frequently after prosecutors stopped investigations against him.
However, the former monarch is likely to be tried in Britain on charges of harassing his Danish ex-girlfriend.
