by

The Taliban Afghanistan’s television channels were asked today to ensure that local presenters appeared on the show with their faces covered, according to an official.

This decision was made a few days after the authorities ordered the women to cover their faces when are located in a public placethus returning to the policy pursued by the hardline Taliban and escalating them restrictions on women.

“Yesterday we met with media executives καν They gladly accepted our advice,” he said. Akif Mahajara spokesman for the Ministry of Ethics and Virtue, speaking to Reuters and claiming that the Afghans will react positively to this decision.

Although he talked about “advice”, added that the measure should be implemented from 21 May. He did not answer a question about the consequences for anyone who does not follow this “advice”.

Most Afghans wear scarf, for religious reasons, but many in urban areas, such as Kabul, do not cover their faces. The previous period of Taliban rule (1996-2001) they were obliged to wear a burqa.

Mahajar said the presenters could wear a medical mask, as they did during the pandemic.

A TV station employee, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that Taliban members visited the offices on Wednesday. “Today, in the production department they wore masks, but in the news department they continued as before,” he said.

Some channels have already started to apply the new rule.
