Finland: New beer launches to celebrate NATO bid

by

A small Finnish brewery, a few tens of kilometers from the Russian border, launched a new beer to celebrate the country’s application to join NATO.

The lager is called Otan olutta – with the first word corresponding to the NATO acronym in French. The full name in Finnish also means “I will drink some beer”.

The beer has “a taste of security with a scent of freedom,” Petri Vadinen, chief executive of Olaf Brewing’s family business in Savonnina, eastern Finland, told Reuters.

Finland and Sweden applied on Wednesday to join NATO, a decision that was a result of the concern caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Moscow initially threatened unspecified retaliation.

But Vadinen said no one was panicking. “We can drink a beer now that we have gone so far in this process. I think it reflects the Finnish mentality quite well, that we just stay calm. There is no reason to panic. “

The blue and white box bears the colors of NATO and depicts a knight holding a cup of foamy beer, while in his armor is the logo of the alliance.
