Putin: Cyber-attacks against Russia by foreign “state structures” have multiplied

by

President Vladimir Putin said today that the number of cyber-attacks in Russia by foreign “state structures” has multiplied and that Russia should strengthen its cyber defense by reducing the use of foreign software and computer hardware.

The websites of many state-owned companies and news sites have undergone sporadic hacking attempts since Russia sent its armed forces to Ukraine on February 24, often to show information that contradicts Moscow’s official line on the conflict.

“Efforts are being made to deactivate Internet resources in Russia’s critical intelligence infrastructure,” Putin said, adding that the media and financial institutions had been targeted.

“Serious attacks have been launched against official government service websites. “Attempts to infiltrate the corporate networks of leading Russian companies are also much more frequent.”

In a meeting with the Security Council of Russia, Putin said Russia should improve information technology security in key areas and focus on the use of domestic technology and equipment.

Moscow has long sought to improve its domestic internet infrastructure, and was disconnected from the global internet during tests last summer.

However, the unprecedented barrage of Western sanctions imposed in response to Moscow’s military campaign in Ukraine has increased pressure to make Russia’s IT systems more resilient.
