Metallurgists at the Caoa Chery factory in Jacareí (SP) this Tuesday (24) refused an offer of compensation to employees who will be fired from the unit, due to the company’s plans to close it for modernization works that will last until 2025.
According to the Metalworkers Union of São José dos Campos e Região, around 200 workers staged a one-and-a-half-hour protest at the factory. The occupation started around 8 am.
Caoa Chery announced earlier this month that it will interrupt vehicle production at the Jacareí plant, its main facility in the country, to adapt the unit to the production of hybrid and electric cars.
Of the factory’s 600 employees, Caoa Chery plans to lay off about 480 people, according to the union. The announcement of the automaker’s plans took place on the 5th.
The company’s proposal involved paying seven to 15 nominal wages to those laid off, without benefits, the organization said.
The category claims five months of suspension of employment contracts (layoff) plus three months of job stability for those who do not adhere to the dismissal plan.
For those who adhere, the workers approved a proposal from the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT) that provides for the payment of 20 nominal wages and an 18-month extension of all benefits.
The factory has been stopped since the end of March.
