The lag in the Income Tax table, which has not been readjusted by the government since 2015, is pointed out as one of the reasons for the Federal Revenue Service to receive a record number of declarations this year. According to the tax authorities, 36.3 million must declare the IR, above the 34.1 million initially projected in the 2022 campaign.
As of 20:00 this Tuesday (31), the last day of delivery, 35.5 million had already declared and the IRS has already started to carry out studies to understand the reason for the increase in delivery, according to José Carlos Fernandes da Fonseca, the tax auditor responsible for the IRS. by IR.
“We still don’t have the total number of declarations presented, but we are already doing some studies that show that we have new declarants. We have an Income Tax table that has not been corrected, this means that, annually, a percentage of people are obliged to present the income tax declaration”, he says.
Other reasons given by the tax authorities for the high number is the number of citizens who started to have operations on the Stock Exchange, which forces them to declare the tax, in addition to the resumption of hiring after two years of the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil.
“There were people who became unemployed due to Covid, got a job again last year and returned to present the income tax declaration. This is also one of the factors that may have increased this number of declarations a little.”
The lag is the biggest since 1996
The Income Tax table has not been corrected since 2015. The last update was in March of that year. The lag in income tax under the Bolsonaro government is the largest in the historical series, which began in 1996. As a result, more and more workers are forced to pay income tax.
The current exemption limit covers taxpayers who earn up to BRL 1,903.98 per month. From this value, the IR is deducted at source. The mandatory declaration starts for those who earn from R$ 2,379.97 per month – those who earn less than that, but are above the exemption range, have the option to declare if they want to receive the IR deducted at source.
In 2021, 34.2 million declarations were received, a number already higher than the previous year, when 31.9 million declared. One of the reasons for the high would have been the obligation to declare the IR in the case of those who received the emergency aid.
