Colombia: Explosion in a coal mine traps 14 workers

Fourteen workers were trapped when an explosion at a coal mine in northern Colombia, the French agency found on Tuesday.

“We do not lose hope, we hope the 14 people trapped can be found alive,” Manuel Pradilla, the mayor of Sulia, told Colombian television.

Sulia is located in the prefecture of North Santander, which borders Venezuela.

One of the miners, who was outside the facility, was seriously injured when the explosion took place, he suffered “burns all over his body”, Mr. Pradija explained.

According to the secretary of the municipal health service, Kherson Ogios, the coal mine operates legally and “belongs to the Carbomax complex”. Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion, which took place the day before yesterday, Monday afternoon.

Rescue services were working yesterday to locate the miners while members of their families, quite visibly upset, were waiting at the scene of the accident, a photojournalist of the French Agency found.
