by

One of the main coffee markets for Brazil, Russia plummeted in the list of importers of the Brazilian product last month. Russians are normally ranked 6th, but dropped to 23rd in May, in volume purchased, due to the war.

According to data from Cecafé (Coffee Exporters Council in Brazil), Russian purchases in Brazil amounted to 18,600 bags, just 0.67% of last month’s Brazilian exports. Revenues dropped to US$ 4.7 million (R$ 23 million).

In the first five months, Russian imports dropped to 292,400 bags, 43% less than in the same period in 2021.

If the sector had a smaller share of Russia, it saw that of Colombia grow, which took the 5th position in the ranking of exports from Brazil. In May, there were 109 thousand bags, 3.9% of Brazilian exports. In the first five months of this year, Colombians bought 552,000 bags in the country. Colombia is one of the main coffee producers and exporters in the world.

In Cecafé’s assessment, last month was a period with fewer problems in logistics, although they persist. With this, the sector managed to export the volume of May and spawn part of what was dammed up.

May exports totaled 2.81 million bags, bringing the volume for the first five months to 16.6 million. In the crop year, which began in July 2021, foreign sales totaled 36.3 million bags, 15% less than in the previous period.

Despite the drop in the volume exported, the revenues obtained by Brazil reached US$ 7.34 billion (R$ 35.9 billion), an increase of 36% in the period.

The three main markets for Brazil this year, in terms of revenue, are Germany, the United States and Belgium. The Germans spent US$ 772 million (R$ 3.78 billion) this year on coffee in Brazil, slightly above the US$ 748 million (R$ 3.66 billion) of the North Americans and the US$ 398 million (R$ $1.95 billion) from the Belgians.
