Opinion – Time machines: GM confirms launches of new electric cars in Brazil

by

General Motors presented this Monday (13) the next steps of its electrification strategy for South America. Three models have been confirmed for the region, and sales in Brazil begin in 2023.

The first launch will be the Bolt EUV, a high-suspension, off-road-style version of the electric hatch. The model costs the equivalent of R$ 145 thousand in the United States.

The car could even arrive earlier, but its production remained interrupted for nine months, being resumed in May. The automaker made a recall due to problems with batteries produced by South Korean LG.

After the Bolt EUV, will come the Blazer EV and Equinox EV, two electric SUVs that are in the final stages of development and should debut in the domestic market between 2024 and 2025.

Despite the coincidence of the name, the new Blazer has nothing to do with the model produced in Brazil between 1995 and 2011.

During the presentation, Marina Willisch, vice president of GM South America, said that the Chevrolet brand will have electric models in all price ranges. To achieve this goal, it will be necessary to produce some of these vehicles in Brazil.

The automaker intends to launch 30 electric and autonomous cars in the world by 2025, the result of an investment of US$ 35 billion (R$ 179 billion).
