Moro makes the Senate a platform against Guedes and Bolsonaro’s economic policy

by

In his first visit to the Senate since joining the Somos, former minister Sergio Moro called the economic policy of the Jair Bolsonaro government, of which he was a member until April of last year, “mistaken”.

Pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, Moro stated this Tuesday (23) that he has “compassion with Brazilians who are hungry” and said that, if approved as it is, the PEC dos Precatório could generate unemployment and high interest rates.

The former minister of Bolsonaro also criticized the PT, saying that the spending ceiling, approved by the Michel Temer (MDB) government, led to a drop in interest rates that were high due to the “recession” caused by PT administrations.

Also at the Congress, the former judge in charge of the Lava Jato lawsuit in Curitiba avoided answering questions about his relationship with central parties and would agree to dialogue with politicians investigated by the operation.

The last time the former magistrate was in the Senate, according to advisers, was during the course of the anti-crime package, approved in December 2019, when he was still part of the government.

Moro was Bolsonaro’s minister until April of last year, when he resigned and accused the president of trying to interfere with the Federal Police. Afterwards, the former judge was partially judged by the STF (Supreme Federal Court) in the processes of Lava Jato in which he condemned former president Lula (PT).

This Tuesday, Moro sought to step away from Bolsonaro’s management.

”While I was in government, I was responsible for the Ministry of Justice, I was never responsible for economic policy. The fact is that the promises of economic policy, of respect for spending ceilings, fiscal responsibility and economic growth, were not fulfilled” , he said.

“The outlook for next year, unfortunately, is one of stagnation or recession, which creates unemployment, and this is a direct product of the government’s fiscal irresponsibility.”

The former minister also criticized the change of name of Bolsa Família to Auxílio Brasil, “something that denies credit in relation to previous policies”.

Last week, Moro announced the name of former Central Bank president Affonso Celso Pastore as one of his advisers on macroeconomics.

The former judge went to Congress on Tuesday under the justification of supporting the position of Somos contrary to the approval of the PEC dos Precatórios sent by the Chamber.

Moro reaffirmed that the party to which he is affiliated defends the expansion of Auxílio Brasil, but that it is possible to do this without “collateral effects” intended by the government, which would be to bring down the ceiling.

“In fact, the big question that arises today is whether social responsibility is incompatible with fiscal responsibility. The answer that the Senate’s Podemos bench has to add is that the two walk together,” he said.

“We are absolutely in favor of combating poverty. It is one of the fundamental objectives written in the Constitution. It is impossible not to have compassion for Brazilians who are hungry as a result of unemployment and a mistaken economic policy,” he stated.

The pre-candidate for the presidency also criticized PT actions. “The spending ceiling, when it was created in 2016, resulted in an immediate drop in interest charged on the market. This boosted the economic recovery that came from the recession created by the Workers’ Party government,” he said.

Senator Oriovisto Guimarães (Podemos-PR) is the author of an alternative proposal to the PEC, which differs from the text sent by the government by making the Auxílio Brasil permanent, for example.

Moro defended the supporter’s proposal and stated that the PEC adopted by the government proposes breaking the spending ceiling and defaulting on the payment of court orders.

The proposal put together by Planalto revises the calculation of the spending ceiling and makes room in the Budget for the payment of Auxílio Brasil, a program that replaced Bolsa Família, at R$400.

According to he.

“We are not going to turn a blind eye to the consequences of this spending cap policy. [Isso] It will generate an increase in inflation, which will have to be answered by the Central Bank with an increase in interest rates,” said Moro.

“When it comes to raising interest rates, the consequence of this is recession. In practice, this means lower wages and unemployment. Podemos cannot condone workers’ unemployment,” he continued.

Asked how it would be possible to govern without having the rapporteur’s amendments criticized by the former minister, the former judge repeated the motto that he preaches a new policy, such as the sheet showed.

“Like I said, [dá para negociar] based on principles, projects and values. Dialogue is always possible.”

Although he has already said in interviews that there are good people in all parties, including those in the center, Moro was silent after being asked whether he would talk to Lava Jato investigated.

Moro also commented on the PSDB previews, which slip due to technological barriers of the application hired by the legend.

“The PSDB is a great party. We have to respect it, they will make their decision in their own time,” he said.

On Tuesday (23), in an interview with Rádio Correio Sat, from Paraíba. Bolsonaro again criticized Moro: he said he wanted to see him lecturing on a car stereo and said he did not pose a threat to his re-election bid.

“I lived with me for a year and four months, then resigned. And he had a purpose of his own here in the Presidency. He rarely told a joke, talked to anyone, and it wasn’t, in my opinion, serving our purposes. I never tried to interfere. nothing from the PF,” Bolsonaro said, rebutting the former judge’s accusations.
