Petrobras may be privatized in the future as long as it is in the Union’s interest, but such a move would make little difference in its operation considering its current governance rules, said on Tuesday (23) the company’s president, Joaquim Silva e Luna.
The executive also added, in an interview to TV Jovem Pan, that the reduction in the number of state-owned companies is “a global trend”, and that the privatization of Petrobras would reduce the receipt of dividends by the government.
“This is a decision that could be taken based on an in-depth study at the initiative of the majority shareholder, the Union. Changing this would be the reduction of what it (the Union) receives in dividends and royalties, because in terms of how it works, difference is very small,” said the executive.
“Being a private or state-owned company, as it works today, the difference is very small,” he added.
“It (Petrobras) has a governance and compliance system that would hardly be changed. Could it be privatized? Yes, this is the trend in the world, to reduce state-owned companies,” he added.
The retired general also confirmed that the company’s new business plan, which will be released on Thursday, will maintain its focus on the pre-salt layer, confirming a Reuters report published last week.
